Volleyball honors awarded to Fairs and McClendon

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The American Athletic Conference announced weekly volleyball honors on Monday, with two players receiving repeat recognition. USF sophomore Erin Fairs was named American Athletic Conference Player of the Week for the third consecutive week, while Louisville freshman Maya McClendon was awarded her fourth Freshman of the Week honor of the season.
 
Fairs earned conference Player of the Week honors as she continues to lead the Bulls, who are on a five-match winning streak after getting two quality wins against Memphis and Temple, upping USF’s record to 13-10 overall and 7-2 in the conference. Fairs had a pair of double-doubles, her 17th and 18th of the season, extending her streak to seven consecutive double-doubles. Fairs led the team with 18 kills and 18 digs in a 3-1 win over Memphis, and followed that with a team-high 15 kills on a .407 hitting percentage along with 15 digs in a sweep of Temple that moved the Bulls into second place in the conference. For the week, Fairs averaged 4.71 kills per set, 4.71 digs per set, and 1.00 blocks per set. Over the past three weeks, Fairs is averaging 4.2 kills per set and 3.9 digs per set. With her recent strong performances, she has moved into first in the conference in kills per set on the season (3.67) and in conference only matches (4.07). She is also the only player in the conference in the top 10 for both kills per set and digs per set.
 
McClendon was named Freshman of the Week as she recorded her seventh and eighth double-doubles of the season this week, leading the Cardinals to three victories and keeping them unbeaten in league play. McClendon had double-digit kills in all three matches, starting with a team-high 11 kills in a 3-0 road sweep of Middle Tennessee on Tuesday. Back on the road for two conference matches, McClendon posted 12 kills and 13 digs in a 3-1 win at Rutgers, and followed that by notching 10 kills and 10 digs in a 3-0 sweep at UConn. For the week, McClendon averaged 3.3 kills and 2.6 digs. In matches in The American, McClendon is second behind Fairs with 3.58 kills per set.
 
Honor Roll
DeLaina Sarden, UCF, Jr., MB
Sarden helped UCF snap a three-match losing streak by leading her team to wins over Temple and Memphis. She hit .511 on the week, recording 3.86 kills per set and 1.43 blocks per set. She leads The American in hitting percentage, and is in the top 10 in kills per set (sixth) and blocks per set (ninth).
 
Immanuella Anagu, UConn, So., MB
Anagu had double-digit kills in each of two matches for the Huskies, hitting .296 on the week with six total blocks.
 
Morgan Allred, Cincinnati, So., OH/DS
Allred led the Bearcats to their first win of the season against Rutgers on Sunday with 19 kills and 11 digs. She had two double-doubles on the week, and averaged 3.79 kills per set, including a career high 22 kills against UConn.
 
Emily Juhl,­­ Louisville, Sr., OH
Juhl earned her second consecutive honor roll nomination for a 3-0 week for the Cardinals. Juhl hit .466 for the week notching 4.43 kills per set and 3.43 digs per set, with 38 kills, 23 digs, six blocks and four aces.
 
Amy Van Sant, USF, Fr., DS/L
Van Sant was key defensively for the Bulls in a 2-0 week, leading the team twice in digs, averaging 4.86 digs on the weekend.
