14 Players to Watch in 2014: Rutgers' Tyler Scaife

Tyler Scaife, 5-9, Freshman, Guard, Rutgers

Tyler Scaife had high hopes entering her freshman campaign at Rutgers. The Little Rock, Arkansas native was ranked the top point guard in the nation, the ninth-rated recruit overall by ESPNU HoopGulrz and was the conference preseason pick for Freshman of the Year. One could say there were lofty expectations for her. 11 games into the season, it is obvious that she did not disappoint. Scaife is third on the team in scoring (11.5 points per game), third in assists (3.0 per game) and second in free-throw percentage (.757).

Her performance the last week of November alone was worthy of an increased role moving forward. In just her second start of the year (she has started six of 11 decisions this season), Scaife had a career-high 18 points on 8-for-13 shooting (.615) leading Rutgers to a nine-point win over Texas Tech in the Barclay’s Women’s Basketball Invitational. She is already making big time plays reminiscent of seasoned players. Scaife was clutch in RU’s win over No. 16/15 Georgia on Dec. 21, hitting a pair of free-throws with seven seconds left to seal the victory for Rutgers, its first win of the season over a ranked opponent.

The Scarlet Knights enter league play on a high note thanks to the assistance from Scaife. At 9-2 overall, Rutgers was back to receiving votes in the Associated Press poll on Monday, Dec. 23.
