The American Athletic Conference has announced winners of the league’s weekly women’s basketball honors for games ending Jan 12.
AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Breanna Stewart * 6-4 * So. * F * UConn
Stewart averaged 18.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 4.5 blocks and 3.5 assists per game in a 2-0 week for the top-ranked Huskies. The sophomore also shot 53.8 percent from the field in wins over Houston and Temple. Stewart started the week with a 24-point, nine-rebound performance in the Huskies' win over Houston on Tuesday. She also blocked six shots and was 8-14 from the floor in only 21-minutes of action. She followed that up with 12 points, four steals and three assists in 20 minutes of action vs. Temple.
AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
Tyler Scaife * 5-9 * G * Rutgers
Scaife helped Rutgers to a pair of conference victories and extend the Scarlet Knights’ win streak to nine by averaging 17.0 points per game last week. She was RU’s second leading scorer in a 78-58 win over Cincinnati last Tuesday by tying her season-high with 18 points. Scaife was 9-for-16 from the field (.563) vs. the Bearcats and added four rebounds and a pair of assists. She followed that with a game-high 16 points in Saturday’s 64-54 win over SMU. Scaife added four rebounds and two steals in the victory.
