No. 13/15 Cincinnati improved to 8-0 in conference play, while No. 22/22 Memphis and SMU moved to 5-2 with wins in the three American Athletic Conference games Sunday afternoon.
The Bearcats had to withstand a late rally from Temple to hold off the Owls in Philadelphia 80-76. Cincinnati took a 19-point lead in the second half, but Temple fought back as G Dalton Pepper, who posted 33 points, tied the game with a 3-pointer with 36.9 seconds remaining. Bearcats G Sean Kilpatrick, who led the team with 29 points, knocked down two free throws with 7.2 seconds remaining and F Jermaine Sanders blocked Temple’s last attempt to seal the win.
SMU used a second-half comeback to push past Houston and run its winning streak to five games. G Nic
Moore missed his first eight shots, then made eight of his last 10 on his way to a career-high 28 points. The Mustangs rebounded from a six-point halftime deficit to outscore the Cougars 50-37 in the second half. G Danuel House had 22 points off the bench to lead Houston.
Memphis caught fire from long distance as the Tigers used a season-high 10 3-pointers to down USF 80-58. G Chris Crawford led Memphis with 15 points, all coming from behind the arc, while G Joe Jackson added 14 points and seven assists and F Shaq Goodwin recorded his fourth career double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. G Martino Brock had a season-high 17 points
for the Bulls.
Teams across the league have Monday night off. SMU is at USF in the lone game set for Tuesday (7
p.m. ET, ESPNews). The teams met 13 days earlier as the Mustangs were 71-54 victors behind F Marcus
Kennedy’s 18 points.
