No. 22/22 Memphis outlasted UCF and Temple held off Rutgers for the Owls’ first conference win in American Athletic Conference action Wednesday night.
Memphis closed out UCF in Orlando, Fla., to pick up its 16th straight conference road victory. G Joe Jackson led the Tigers with 17 points and five rebounds and five assists, while G Isaiah Sykes posted 24 points, 12 rebounds, and five assists for UCF. Memphis shot 23-of-45 from the field (.511), including 7-of-12 (.583) from 3-point range.
Temple raced a 20-point lead in the second half, and held off Rutgers to prevail 88-82 at the Liacouras Center. The Owls, who snapped their longest losing streak in 38 years (eight games), got 21 points from G Will Cummings and 20 from G Dalton Pepper. F Kadeem Jack had 18 points and eight rebounds for Rutgers.
Two more games are on tap for Thursday night, highlighted by a showdown between the teams at the top of the conference standings.
No. 13/15 Cincinnati meets No. 12/7 Louisville at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN from the KFC Yum! Center in Louisville. The game features the top two scorers in the conference with Cincinnati G Sean Kilpatrick (19.1 ppg) facing Louisville G Russ Smith (18.1 ppg). Louisville has the conference’s top-scoring offense (83.2 ppg), while Cincinnati brings the league’s stingiest defense (56.9 ppg). Louisville leads the all-time series 55-42 and has won the past two meetings.
The second game of the night features Houston at UConn (9 p.m. ET, CBSSN) at Gampel Pavilion in Storrs, Conn. The game is a rematch from the opening day of conference play when the Cougars upended the Huskies 75-71 in Houston on New Year’s Eve. The Cougars will play in Gampel Pavilion for the first time since a 72-70 UConn win in 2000. UConn G Shabazz Napier averages a league best 21.9 points in conference games, while Houston F TaShawn Thomas has averaged 16.4 points and 8.8 rebounds per game this season.
