PROVIDENCE, R.I. -
The American Athletic Conference announced the men’s soccer awards for the 2014 season, which were voted on by the league’s eight head coaches. UConn, the American regular season champion, took home four major awards.

UConn sophomore Cyle Larin was voted the American Offensive Player of the Year, while teammate Sergio Campbell was tabbed American Defensive Player of the Year. Husky senior Adria Beso Marco was named American Midfielder of the Year, while USF’s Spasoje Stefanovic and SMU’s Michael Nelson share American Goalkeeper of the Year honors. UConn freshman Cheikh Stephane Coly was selected as the American Rookie of the Year to round out the major awards. The American all-conference and all-rookie teams were also announced.

Larin earned Offensive Player of the Year honors after scoring a team high nine goals and 21 points for the season. The forward leads the conference in several categories, including points per game (1.40), goals per game (0.60) and shots per game (4.13). Larin, last year’s American Rookie of the Year, also garnered First Team All-Conference honors. The sophomore helped lead UConn to the 2014 American regular season championship as the Huskies tallied 19 points and a 6-1-1 mark in league play.

Campbell was awarded American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year honors, leading a UConn backline that allowed just three total goals in conference play. The Huskies were tops in The American with a 0.36 goals against average in league play and recorded eight total shutouts on the year, five of those coming in conference play. The senior also earned the league’s preseason Defensive Player of the Year honor and was a unanimous choice for First Team All-Conference accolades.

Beso Marco was named The American’s Midfielder of the Year for the second consecutive season. The senior team captain, a Lleida, Spain native, started in every game for UConn this season and recorded eight points for the Huskies. UConn is riding a six-game win streak entering conference semifinals action. During the regular season, Beso Marco scored his first career-game winning goal in the Huskies’ victory over Yale on Oct. 28. He recorded a season-high two assists in UConn’s quarterfinals win over fifth-seeded Temple on Nov. 8.

Stefanovic, the American Athletic Conference Goalkeeper of the Year, started all 18 games for USF and logged 1584:38 minutes in the net with 53 saves. He was named the American Goalkeeper of the Week three times this season. Nelson, a redshirt freshman, was also tabbed Goalkeeper of the Year. He ranks second in the conference in goals against average (0.92) and top-three in total saves (55) and shutouts (5). SMU leads the league in fewest goals allowed per game (0.94) and has yielded a conference-low 16 total goals this season.

Coly was tabbed the conference Rookie of the Year after providing defense in the midfield for a UConn team that finished first in the league in goals allowed (3) in conference play. He has started all 18 of UConn’s matches this season and finished his first year in Storrs with two points and one goal. Coly was a unanimous choice for the All-Rookie team and garnered American Rookie of the Week honors twice this season.

UConn head coach Ray Reid and his staff garnered Coaching Staff of the Year honors. The Huskies earned their 13th-ever conference regular season title and the top overall seed in the American Men’s Soccer Championship. It was the second regular season crown for UConn in the last three years.

USF earned the Team Fair Play Award after totaling 106 points (76 fouls, six yellow cards and zero red cards) during conference play. The Fair Play Award is given to the team with the fewest accumulated fouls, yellow cards and red cards in league action (foul=one point; yellow card=five points; red card =10 points).
