TAMPA, FL. –
In a hard fought championship match in South Florida, the UConn Huskies needed 110 minutes and a shootout to claim the American Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Championship.  The game ended in a technical tie, but UConn’s 3-2 edge on penalty kicks won them both the conference championship trophy and an automatic bid to the NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship.

It was UConn’s goalie tandem of Allison Saucier and Emily Armstrong who kept the Huskies in the match, blocking a combined nine shots in the double overtime game.  In the first half, Saucier saved five shots on goal, including coming out of net to challenge All-Tournament forward Leticia Skeet, turning away three of her shots on goal.  As she has most of the season, Armstrong took over in goal for the second half and both overtimes, blocking all four Bulls’ shots on goal.  She stayed in goal for the shootout round, coming up clutch with a block of USF’s final attempt, taken by Olivia Chance.

Megan Hunsberger, fourth in line for Huskies during the shootout, clinched the title with her strike into the top right of the net, freezing USF keeper Kat Elliott.

The USF offense gave the Huskies all they could handle in this final game of The American post-season.  The Huskies defense turned away a total five shots each by Skeete and Chance, and another three by First Team All-Conference midfielder Demi Stokes.

Congratulations to our 2014 Women's Soccer Champions @uconnhuskies

The Bulls did a terrific job controlling the ball though a critical six minute period early in the first half when forward Sarah Miller came off the field with an injury.  Electing not to substitute for Miller while her injury was being evaluated, USF played a man down until her return in the 16th minute.

As American Athletic Conference Champion, UConn receives an automatic berth in the NCAA tournament.  They will wait until the bracket is announced Monday at 4:30 pm ET to see if they will host their first round match.
