UConn C Amida Brimah had one of the top offensive performances in program history Sunday at XL Center, leading the Huskies back into the win column to highlight the afternoon’s action in The American.
Brimah tallied 40 points and 12 rebounds while going 13-of-13 from the floor in UConn’s 106-85 victory over Coppin State, lifting the Huskies to 4-3 on the season. The 13 made field goals without a miss marked a program record, eclipsing Kirk King’s 10-for-10 performance in 1996. The scoring output was the 17
th 40-point game in UConn history and the second-most ever by a player from The American. Brimah was also 14-for-16 from the free throw line in the contest. G Ryan Boatright added 22 points for UConn in the win.
Temple fell 85-62 at No. 7/7 Villanova as the Owls dropped to 6-4. G Quenton DeCosey was one of three Owls in double-figures, leading Temple with 18 points. G Will Cummings added 14 while F Obi Enechionyia chipped in 10.
A pair of teams from The American will be in action with home games Monday. USF hosts Georgia Southern as the Bulls look to better their 5-3 mark. The game will be USF’s first in nine days, but also the first of four over the next nine days. Monday will be Georgia Southern’s first contest in 13 days and their second consecutive game against a team from The American. The 4-2 Eagles were last in action Dec. 2 at UCF, falling 61-59 to the Knights.
Memphis will take on North Carolina Central at FedEx Forum to continue a nine-game homestand for the Tigers. Memphis was last in action Saturday, falling 73-55 to Oklahoma State and dropping to 3-4. NCCU was the MEAC tournament champion in the 2014, capturing a No. 14 seed in the NCAA tournament, the best-ever seed line for the MEAC champion. The Eagles are 6-4 on the year following a 67-56 loss at No. 19/20 Maryland Wednesday.
