The American Today - Overtime Battle Highlights Opening Day of Conference Play

Ten of the 11 teams in The American opened up conference play with Wednesday afternoon games, as Memphis, SMU, Temple, Tulane and Tulsa began their league slates 1-0.
 
Temple and UConn battled into overtime in Hartford before the Owls outlasted the Huskies 57-53. G Jesse Morgan continued his hot start to his time with the Owls, tallying 17 points while making four 3-pointers. F Daniel Hamilton had 10 points and 12 rebounds for UConn. Temple won its fourth-straight game, improving to 10-4 on the year, with UConn dropping to 6-5.
 
Tulsa picked up a 56-54 road win at UCF as the Golden Hurricane improved to 8-5. G Shaquille Harrison led Tulsa with 22 points on 9-of-13 shooting. G Adonys Henriquez had 17 points for UCF, while F Justin McBride tallied 10 points and 10 rebounds in 23 minutes of action. UCF fell to 7-5 in the defeat. The Knights erased a 15-point second-half deficit before Tulsa pulled away in the final minutes.
 
Tulane closed the first half on a 25-2 run, downing East Carolina 67-59 at Minges Coliseum. G Jonathan Stark led the way for the Green Wave with 22 points while G Louis Dabney added 19. East Carolina made 10 3-pointers in the contest, including four from G Paris Roberts-Campbell, who had a team-high 14 points. Tulane improved to 10-3 in the win while ECU dropped to 7-7.
 
G Avery Woodson hit six 3-pointers and had 23 points to lead Memphis to its fifth-consecutive victory, a 73-54 win over Houston at FedEx Forum. F Austin Nichols chipped in 15 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks for the Tigers, who bettered their record to 8-4. F Devonta Pollard had 17 points to lead the Cougars, who fell to 7-5.
 
SMU opened up its conference slate with an 83-49 win over USF at Moody Coliseum. Four Mustangs were in double figures, led by 15 from F Ben Moore. G Nic Moore had eight points to go along with seven assists for SMU, which won its eighth-straight to improve to 10-3. F Chris Perry had 12 points and eight rebounds for USF, which dropped to 6-8.
