PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Teams across The American picked up 14 victories over opening weekend of the baseball season, and two players were honored with the first weekly awards. Louisville outfielder Jeff Gardner was named Player of the Week, while Houston’s Jared West was named Pitcher of the Week.
Gardner hit .417 (5-for-12) during Louisville’s 2-1 opening weekend, recording a conference-best six RBIs and 12 total bases, including a triple and a home run. In the season opener, the senior hit a solo home run in the bottom of the 10
th inning in a 6-6 game to give Louisville its first walk-off victory of the season.
West earned his first collegiate win as he carried a perfect game through 6.2 innings in 7.0 shutout innings against Nicholls State. The sophomore, who threw just 7.1 total innings last season, allowed just one hit and no walks with four strikeouts while completing seven innings in just 63 pitches.

Tommy Williams, Jr., SS/2B, UCF
Hit .538 (7-for-13) with two doubles, his first collegiate home run, four RBIs and one stolen base in UCF’s three-game sweep of Siena.
Aaron Garza, Jr., P, Houston
Opened the season with seven shutout innings Friday against Nicholls State, allowing just three base runners (two hits, one walk) and tied a career high with six strikeouts.
Zach Willis, Sr., 2B, Memphis
Led the Tigers in a 3-0 week against Western Michigan by hitting .600 (6-for-10) with a double and two RBIs. The senior tied a career-high with three hits Sunday, and had his 100
th career hit with a game-winning single in the opener Friday.
Jimmy Herget, So., P, USF
Threw seven innings against Liberty, a 2013 NCAA Tournament team, allowing zero earned runs and posting a WHIP of 0.71.
Luke Maglich, So., OF, USF
Recorded a hit in all three games, hitting. 500 (7-for-14) with a home run, five RBIs and three runs scored. Also threw out the would-be tying run at the plate in the seventh inning against Liberty.
