Wagner, Vogasari honored as Tennis Players of the Week

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Louisville’s Albert Wagner and Houston’s Despoina Vogasari were recognized as Tennis Players of the Week, the American Athletic Conference announced Tuesday.
 
Wagner was named Men’s Player of the Week after leading the Cardinals to a win over No. 59 Nebraska. The junior keyed a 4-2 victory with wins at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles. His doubles victory, 6-5 (7-4) clinched the doubles point for Louisville, and a three-set victory (6-3, 4-6, 6-2) over Marc Hermann in singles sealed the victory for the Cardinals.
 
Vogasari was named Women’s Player of the Week after a 2-0 week in both singles and doubles. The freshman won both of her matches at No. 1 singles in straight sets. Her victory over Mississippi State’s No. 72 Georgia Patrasc on Sunday marked Houston’s first victory over a ranked individual in over six years.
 
AROUND THE AMERICAN - NOTES
Memphis’ women’s squad defeated two ranked Texas opponents for a 2-0 week. The Tigers defeated No. 40 TCU 4-3, than knocked off conference foe No. 75 SMU 5-2.

Four other women’s programs earned victories over the past week, with USF (Tulane), Rutgers (Army), Cincinnati (Butler) and UCF (Georgia Southern) all earning victories.
