The American Today: Louisville Edges Cincinnati In Top-10 Showdown

Three closely contested games highlighted Saturday’s schedule in the American Athletic Conference, including a thriller in Cincinnati between the top two teams in the league standings.
 
No. 11/5 Louisville pulled even in the conference loss column with No. 7/9 Cincinnati as a short jumper by G Russ Smith with 2.2 seconds left gave the Cardinals a 58-57 decision at Fifth Third Arena. The game, which featured three lead changes in the final 26 seconds, ended Cincinnati’s 19-game winning streak at home and it extended Louisville’s overall winning streak to six games. F Montrezl Harrell led Louisville with 21 points and 10 rebounds, while G Sean Kilpatrick led Cincinnati with 28 points.
 
The largest margin of victory in The American Saturday was four points as Houston held off UCF 88-84 at Hofheinz Pavilion. The Cougars shot 58.3 percent from the field and 62.5 percent from 3-point range as G Danuel House scored 18 points and G Jherrod Stiggers had 17. G Isaiah Sykes scored 19 points with 13 rebounds and six assists for the Knights.
 
No. 22/24 Memphis capped the day with an 82-79 overtime win against Temple. The Tigers shot 57.4 percent from the field as F Shaq Goodwin scored 20 points, while F Austin Nichols had 17 points, 12 rebounds and seven blocks. Temple had three players with 20 points each, led by G Will Cummings, who had 24 points.
 
The lone game on Sunday’s docket takes place in Storrs, Conn., as SMU visits No. 21/21 UConn (2 p.m. ET, CBS Sports Network). The Mustangs took the first meeting this season, 74-65, in Dallas. UConn will honor its 1999 NCAA Championship team as well as former standout Khalid El-Amin at halftime Sunday.
