PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Commissioner Mike Aresco has announced that Temple wide receiver Ryan Alderman, a one-time walk-on who played in 48 career games and was elected team captain as a senior, been chosen as the 2013 American Athletic Conference Football Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The selection was made by the conference’s Academic Affairs Committee and is presented on the basis of academic credentials and athletic performance.
A senior from Downington, Pa., Alderman will receive a $2,000 scholarship, which may be applied to graduate or professional studies, as the Football Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
The Conference also announced the 247 players who were chosen to the American Athletic Conference Football All-Academic Team. The All-Academic selections must have earned a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 through the Fall 2013 academic term and completed a minimum of two consecutive semesters, or three consecutive quarters of academic work, with a total of 18 semester or 27 quarter credits, not including remedial courses.
Alderman was the second-leading receiver for Temple in 2014. He finished the year with 40 receptions for 548 yards and two touchdowns, averaging 13.7 yards per catch. He had season highs of seven receptions and 96 yards in a 28-21 loss to UConn Nov. 23 and finished with at least four receptions in seven of the Owls’ 12 games. Alderman also saw action on special teams, finishing with a team-high 58 yards on 10 punt returns.
Alderman completed his career with the distinction of having never missed a game in his four years.
In addition to his on-field accomplishments, Alderman carries a 3.21 grade-point average in Temple’s graduate program in innovation management and entrepreneurship. He earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration and finance with an undergraduate GPA of 3.59.
Alderman has a distinguished record of community service, including volunteering at a number of Philadelphia-area soup kitchens and homeless shelters, assisting with youth football camps and working with Habitat for Humanity and Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
The Football Scholar-Athlete of the Year honor is one of a number of scholarships presented by the American Athletic Conference during the 2013-14 academic year. The conference also names winners of the league’s Institutional Scholar-Athlete Scholarships, which go to one male and one female student-athlete at each of the conference’s 10 member institutions. The American additionally names male and female Basketball Scholar-Athletes of the Year.
The winners of the institutional, football and basketball awards are then eligible for the American Athletic Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, which provides an additional postgraduate scholarship to one male and one female student-athlete.
2013 American Athletic Conference All-Academic Football Team
The 247 members of the 2013 American Athletic Conference All-Academic Football Team were nominated by the respective institutions. To be nominated, a player must have a cumulative grade-point index of at least 3.0 and completed a minimum of two consecutive semesters, or three consecutive quarters of academic work, with a total of 18 semester or 27 quarter credits, not including remedial courses.
