UNCASVILLE, Conn. – No. 1 seed UConn routed No. 2 seed Louisville 72-52 for the inaugural American Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Championship. The win marked the third for UConn against Louisville this season.
UConn came out hot with two three-pointers and a steal to start the game off on an 8-0 run, but Louisville countered with a three from Shoni Schimmel and a basket from Sara Hammond to tighten the score to 10-5. By the eight minute mark of the first half, UConn went on another run to up the lead to 17 (27-10).
At halftime, the Huskies led by 22 points (40-22) and led the rest of the game—with the highest scoring margin being 25 points.
Louisville attempted 29 three-pointers, converting on nine shots and only saw the foul line three times—all toward the end of the second half. UConn made 40 percent of their three-point shot attempts, shooting 6-for-15. Overall, Louisville shot 30.3 percent from the field to UConn’s 40 percent.
Four Huskies scored double digit points, but Breanna Stewart, the Most Outstanding Player awardee for the Championship, led all UConn players with 20 points, nine rebounds, two steals, six assists and four blocks. Bria Hartley added in 16 points and Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis chipped in 13 points.
For Louisville, Shoni Schimmel led her team with 20 points, seven rebounds and one steal.
Four Huskies were awarded with All-Championship Team honors: Bria Hartley, Stefanie Dolson and Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis. Shoni Schimmel received All-Championship Team honors for Louisville, and Courtney Williams received the honor for USF.
Both teams are expected to compete in the 2014 NCAA women’s basketball tournament beginning later this month and are vying for No. 1 seeds.
