PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Overall top-seed UConn and No. 3 seed Louisville were selected to the field of 64 teams that will compete for the 2014 NCAA Women's Basketball Championship.
UConn, the American tournament and regular-season champion, is the No. 1 seed in the Lincoln Regional. The Huskies will face SWAC champion and No. 16 seed Prairie View A&M in Storrs, Conn. on Sunday at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN. UConn is seeking its ninth NCAA Championship title.
Louisville opens tournament play in Iowa City against No. 14 Idaho on Sunday at 5:30 p.m. ET. The game will air live on ESPN. The Cards are making their 17th NCAA appearance and ninth appearance in 10 seasons. Louisville advanced to the Sweet 16 three times and to the Final Four in 2009 and 2013.
“We are proud that the American Athletic Conference has two of the top three seeds in the NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship, as well as the overall No. 1 seed,” said Commissioner Mike Aresco. “Our league has been extremely competitive this year, as evidenced by four of our programs having been ranked or receiving votes in the national polls. We are confident that this success will continue into the postseason.”
The 2014 Women’s Final Four will be held April 6 and 8 at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tenn. UConn is the defending national champion after claiming the 2013 title in New Orleans with a win over Louisville in the title game.
