UNCASVILLE, CONN. – The No. 10 seed Houston Cougars scored a 73-67 upset victory over the No. 7 seed Memphis Tigers in the first round of the American Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Championship. The Cougars (6-24) were led by sophomore forward Marche’ Amerson, who scored a career-high 24 points. Senior Te’onna Cambell added 15 points and seven rebounds for Houston, which won for the second time since Christmas.
Memphis sophomore guard Ariel Hearn also notched a career-high with 27 points in a losing effort. The Tigers closed out the season with a 13-18 record.
An up-tempo first half saw the teams deadlocked at 31 after the first twenty minutes of play. Memphis opened the game hot on a 9-0 run out of the gate, but Houston shot 50 percent (11-for-22) from the floor in the frame to even the score at the intermission.
The second half was a back-and-forth affair, with the Cougars holding a slim 49-48 lead with 7:51 to play. An 11-2 run opened up an eight-point lead for Houston with three minutes to play, but Ariel Hearn hit three consecutive 3-pointers to get Memphis back within one possession. However, the Cougars pulled away down the stretch and finished off the 73-67 victory.
With the win, Houston advances to play No. 2 seed Louisville in Saturday’s quarterfinals at 6:00 p.m
