UNCASVILLE, CONN. – The No. 1 seed UConn Huskies made a statement with a huge first half en route to an 83-57 victory over No. 4 seed Rutgers and a berth in the inaugural American Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Championship Finals.
The Huskies displayed their offensive firepower early and often against the Scarlet Knights. UConn knocked down their first five shots to open the game up 13-0. Behind hot shooting and five consecutive makes beyond the three-point arc, UConn extended that lead to 28-9 before taking a 50-19 halftime lead.
The Huskies maintained their lead during a tighter second half that saw Rutgers outscore UConn 38-33 in the final twenty minutes. UConn finished off the Scarlet Knights for a 26-point semifinal victory.
Breanna Stewart led five Huskies in double figures with a game-high 22 points and seven rebounds. Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis added 19 points for UConn, while Briyona Canty led the Scarlet Knights with 16 points.
UConn made 13 three-pointers while Rutgers did not attempt a shot from three-point distance. The Huskies shot 51.6 percent from the floor overall.
UConn will move on to Monday night’s finals, where they will face the winner of Sunday’s second semifinal between No. 2 seed Louisville and No. 3 seed USF. Tipoff is at 7 p.m. on ESPN.
