PROVIDENCE, R.I. – With some strong performances and a combined three wins over ranked opponents, student athletes from Memphis and Houston were honored as American Athletic Conference Tennis Players of the Week Tuesday. Memphis’ Joe Salisbury was named Men’s Tennis Player of the Week for the second time this spring, while Houston’s Elena Kordolaimi earned her second Women’s Tennis Player of the Week award.
Salisbury helped Memphis to a pair of ranked wins, with a perfect 2-0 record in both singles and doubles. The senior did not drop a set en route to improving his singles record to 21-10 on the season as the Tigers won 4-2 over conference foe No. 35 Louisville and 4-0 over No. 45 VCU. Salisbury also picked up a doubles win over the No. 43 ranked duo of Nick Jones and Alexis Heugas of VCU, and has won eight straight matches at No. 1 doubles.
Kordolaimi guided No. 33 Houston to a win over No. 31 DePaul, earning her first win over a ranked opponent this season by defeating No. 125 Patricia Fargas in three sets. The junior trailed 5-2 in the final set before winning each of the next five games to win the match. Kordolaimi has won a team-leading six straight matches and represented the match-clinching point in the last two wins.
AROUND THE AMERICAN – MEN’S
Four men’s teams were ranked in the April 1
st ITA rankings –USF (25), Memphis (31), Louisville (35), and UCF (57).
UCF had a 2-0 week, picking up wins over Bethune-Cookman and Troy.
After falling to Memphis, Louisville picked up a nonconference win over No. 45 VCU with a 4-2 win.
In a 1-1 week, USF got a 6-1 win on the road against No. 39 Tulsa.
Temple went 2-0 with wins over La Salle (6-0) and at Navy (4-3).
AROUND THE AMERICAN – WOMEN’S
Four women’s teams were ranked in the April 1
st ITA rankings –Houston (33), Memphis (41), USF (46), and Louisville (49).
UCF defeated UAB 4-1 last week after falling at FIU.
Cincinnati went 1-1 with a 5-2 win over Northern Kentucky before falling at Marshall.
UConn had a 2-1 week with road wins over Georgetown and Villanova.
SMU went 3-0 on the week with wins over Middle Tennessee, Texas State and UTSA. Freshman Macie Elliot went 5-0 on the week to lead the Mustangs.
Four teams went 1-0 with a win in their only action of the week. Memphis got a 7-0 win over Marquette. Temple defeated Providence 6-1, and USF defeated VCU 5-2. Rutgers defeated conference foe UConn 6-1.
