Tampa, Fla. – After a day full of eight field events, the conclusion of the heptathlon and decathlon, and two 5,000 meter finals, SMU and Louisville held onto the lead entering the final day of competition.
The first event of the day was the men’s javelin, where Rutgers sophomore Thomas Carr claimed the title with a throw of 66.81 meters. Carr now holds the top two throws in the conference, coming in his last two meets.
In the women’s javelin, SMU’s Lucija Cvitanovic took the title. Her throw of 50.63 meters was a conference best en route
to the victory.
The pole vault crown went to Memphis sophomore Carolina Carmichael, with a mark of 4.08 meters. Houston’s Karley King was second, with Memphis also scoring points from third (Clara Amat-Fernandez) and fourth (Sabrina Hochreuther).
The women’s long jump went to Rutgers, with junior Gabrielle Farquharson posting a distance of 6.18 meters. Current conference leader, UCF’s Jen Clayton, finished second.
Memphis’ Yannik Schaly took the men’s shot put title. The sophomore tossed it 18.39 meters to edge Houston freshman Cameron Cornelius (18.36 meters).
The men’s high jump was won by Memphis’ Darius Lynwood, who cleared 2.10 meters. Lynwood now has the top two jumps in the conference this year with his past two events at 2.11m and 2.10m.
The men’s long jump champion was Rutgers’ Corey Crawford, who leapt 7.58 meters. Crawford previously won the long jump title at the conference Indoor meet, and took second in the country in the Indoor NCAA Championships.
The women’s shot put winner was Temple’s Margo Britton with a mark of 16.07 meters, which she reached on her last throw.
The women’s 5,000 meter run was captured by Mustangs’ freshman Agnes Sjostrom. She ran a blistering 16:09.28, defeating her closest competitor by 11 seconds and notching the fastest time in the conference this year by 25 seconds.
The men’s 5,000 meter run was won by Louisville, as junior Tyler Byrne finished the race in 14:18.75.
The decathlon wrapped up Saturday with the 110 meter hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin, and 1500 meter run. Memphis’ Luis Hassler finished with 7,471 points to take the title.
The heptathlon concluded Saturday with the long jump, javelin, and 800-meter run. SMU’s Lucija Cvitanovic posted 5,534 points to win, wining the last two events (javelin and 800-meter run) to take the title. She held off the day one leader Cassie Wiley of Houston, who finished second with 5,216 points.
The Championship will conclude on Sunday, beginning with the men’s pole vault at 10:00 a.m. Twenty-four event winners will be awarded throughout the day, with the final awards ceremony scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
