PROVIDENCE, R.I. – After a banner season in the inaugural year of the American Athletic Conference, the league will look to continue earning recognition this summer at The ESPYs. On July 16
th at ESPN’s annual awards show, representatives of the conference are nominated in seven different categories.
After winning the national championship in both men’s and women’s basketball, UConn has a chance to bring home multiple ESPYs. The women’s team completed an undefeated season en route to the title, and is nominated for Best Team. Breanna Stewart led the Huskies this season, and was already named the 2014 Associated Press Player of the Year and 2014 Naismith Trophy Winner. She will look to add to that hardware with nominations for Best Female Athlete and Best Female College Athlete.
UConn head coach Geno Auriemma is up for Coach of the Year after his team’s unbeaten run, but he faces competition from his men’s counterpart in Storrs, Kevin Ollie. The men’s team is also a candidate for best upset after becoming the first ever No. 7 seed to win the NCAA Tournament. Huskies guard Shabazz Napier, the 2014 NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player, is nominated for Best Championship Performance.
This season in The American also featured two highlights that are candidates for the year’s Best Play. SMU football completed a wild two-point conversion to complete a big comeback in an October game against Rutgers. Memphis provided one of the most thrilling plays of the season, with a fast break that featured an over-the-head lob, behind-the-back pass, and an alley-oop dunk.
