Commissioner Mike Aresco visited Tulane on Monday, August 11 and officially welcomed the Green Wave to the league. Tulane President Michael A. Fitts and Athletic Director Rick Dickson hosted a meet-and-greet press conference with Aresco at Yulman Stadium.
The press conference marked the first event in the new stadium as well as the first public event for President Fitts. Among those on hand for the press conference was political consultant and Tulane alum James Carville, a member of the university faculty since 2009.
Tulane is one of the most highly regarded and selective independent research institutions in the United States and boasts one of the oldest and most storied athletics programs in the Southeast. Green Wave student-athletes have been among the highest achievers nationally in the classroom, according to the most recent multi-year Academic Performance Rates (APR).
“This is a distinguished university with a proud history,” Aresco said. “Tulane is making its mark in athletic competition and showing the world what resolve and fortitude, and intelligent planning and execution, can accomplish.”
Tulane opens the football season on Aug. 28, when the Green Wave takes on fellow American newcomer Tulsa. Tulane returns to campus for the first time in nearly 40 years on Sept. 6 hosting Georgia Tech. The Green Wave last played on campus when it closed out its final game at old Tulane Stadium against Ole Miss on Nov. 30, 1974.
