American Women's Soccer Opening Day Recap

The American Athletic Conference went 4-3-1 on the opening day of women's soccer.

Rachel Hill converted a penalty kick early in the second half leading UConn to a 1-0 victory over Hofstra Friday evening at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium.

Hill led all players on the day with nine total shots, including four attempts on goal. The Huskies as a team out-shot the Pride 21-10. UConn keeper Emily Armstrong made seven saves to record her seventh career clean sheet.

Emily Elsbrock scored the game-winning goal in Cincinnati's 2-1 overtime win over Samford.

After falling behind 1-0 in the 14th minute, the Bearcats evened things up in the 21st minute on a goal from Laura Rose. Elsbrock broke up the tie in OT by netting the game-winning goal four minutes into the extra frame.

Temple opened its 2014 campaign with a 2-0 win over Binghamton Friday night in Vestal, N.Y.

Gina DiTaranto scored the first goal from Temple in the 17th minute. Shannon Senour pushed the Owl advantage to 2-0 after making a cross from the right end line where DiTaranto kicked it in from six yards out for the first goal.

Tulsa picked up a 1-0 win over Abilene Christian in the Golden Hurricane home opener.

Lauren King scored the game-winner for Tulsa off a pass from Madison Smith at the 53:59 mark. Kajal Parmar and Rachel Thun both had a team-best four shots, while goalkeeper Marleigh Essler played all 90 minutes and earned two saves while picking up her first career shutout.

Houston opened its 2014 season with a 0-0 (2 OT) tie against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Friday evening at Carl Lewis Field.

It was a physical game as both teams combined for 20 fouls and three yellow cards. Jordan Brown played all 110 minutes in goal for the Cougars and picked up three saves.

Six second-half shots on goal weren’t enough to propel USF past FAU as the Bulls fell 1-0 in their home opener.

FAU took a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute when Claire Emslie scored on a free kick. Despite the loss, the Bulls outshot the Owls 13-8 on the night while USF keeper Thordis Aikman stopped four shots.

The loss snapped the 18-game home-unbeaten streak for USF. The last home loss came in 2012 in the home opener against UCF.

In front of a record crowd of 883 fans, East Carolina fell victim to a pair of set-piece goals as 14th-ranked South Carolina picked up a 2-0 victory over the Pirates Friday evening at Johnson Stadium.

The final attendance number tops the 853 total from the stadium's inaugural game on Aug. 19, 2011 versus the Gamecocks. ECU successfully cleared three South Carolina corner kick opportunities through the first 45 minutes to keep the game scoreless, despite being outshot, 3-0.

SMU dropped its opening match of the 2014 season to the 13th-ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers, 4-0, Friday evening at Nebraska Soccer Field.

Nebraska outshot SMU, 10-1, in the first half. The Mustangs provided more offense in the second stanza, putting up four corner kicks and four shots on goal. Lissi Lonsberry led the Mustangs with two shots on goal. Junior keeper Shannon Moroney played the full 90 minutes in net, totaling five saves.
