Women's Soccer Recap: ECU, SMU, Temple and Tulsa Pick Up Wins

East Carolina, SMU, Temple and Tulsa each picked up wins in women's soccer action around The American on Friday.

The Pirates topped George Mason 2-0 while the Mustangs defeated Texas Southern 1-0. Tulsa bested Missouri State 3-2 in overtime.

The shutout was the second in a row for East Carolina, who defeated Western Carolina, 1-0, last Sunday. ECU has now recorded back-to-back shutout victories at least once in each of the last three seasons. The Pirates and the Patriots finished the game with 12 shots apiece. Saundra Baron made a season-high five saves in her ninth-career shutout.

Vanessa Valadez scored the Mustangs' lone goal in the win over the Tigers at Westcott Field. Valadez led SMU in shots with seven, including four on goal, while keeper Lissa Lonsberry earned the shutout in the net.

Temple defeated Saint Joseph's 1-0 on the road at Sweeney Field. Junior goalkeeper Shauni Kerkhoff had six saves for her second shutout of the season.  She made four of them in the first half to stop the Hawks.

Madison Smith scored the game-winning goal in Tulsa's 3-2 overtime win over Missouri State in the Holiday Inn City Center Tulsa Invitational. Smith scored the game winner from 10 yards out with just 38-seconds ticked off the clock in the first overtime period. The Golden Hurricane had a 17-3 lead in shots, including an 8-2 advantage in shots on goal, and led 5-2 lead in corner kicks.

In other women's soccer action around the league, USF tied Navy 1-1 in double overtime while UCF and UConn dropped road games at Top-10 foes Texas A&M and Penn State, respectively. Vanderbilt edged Cincinnati 3-2 in double overtime.
