Volleyball Recap: UCF Continues Hot Start

Two teams remained perfect in non-conference play after the second day of the 2014 American Athletic Conference volleyball season, highlighted by two more dominant performances from UCF and two victories each from Temple and SMU.
 
UCF and Temple stand with unblemished records through Saturday’s play, as the Knights lead the charge with a 4-0 mark. UCF finished the weekend with four sweeps, as the Knights bested Northeastern and FIU in three sets each on Saturday. Jale Hervey continued her hot start to her first year in Orlando, as the sophomore transfer finished the weekend hitting .481 with 5.00 kills per set.
 
Temple opened its season with a pair of wins, sweeping Niagara before outlasting Syracuse in five sets. Caroline Grattan tallied a double-double of 15 kills and 11 digs in the early match against Niagara, while Sandra Sydlik had 52 assists and 15 digs in the nightcap against Syracuse.
 
SMU picked up two victories to move to 2-1 on the year, defeating Georgia and Fordham in San Francisco. The Mustangs’ Janelle Giordano hit .463 over the course of the weekend.
 
Four teams went 1-1 on the day, as Cincinnati, UConn, Houston and Tulsa all joined SMU at 2-1. Cincinnati swept UC Irvine at home before going across town and falling to Xavier in front of a crowd of nearly 1,000.
 
UConn played a pair of five-set matches, defeating in-state foe Central Connecticut before being edged by Indiana. The Huskies’ Brianna Datti tallied 35 digs in the early-match victory over the Blue Devils.
 
Houston fell to Texas State in four before getting past Wake Forest in a five-set showdown, with Keandra McCardell tallying 57 sets in the victory.
 
Tulsa defeated host Houston Baptist in three sets before falling to Northern Arizona. The Golden Hurricane notched 18.91 digs per set on the weekend, slightly above their nation’s-best pace from a year ago.
 
USF was defeated in its lone match of the day by No. 14 San Diego, while Memphis dropped a five-set match to Alabama and Tulane fell to Iowa in three sets.
