Men’s Soccer Weekly Honors Announced

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Four American Athletic Conference players were honored with the conference’s first men’s soccer weekly awards for the 2014 season. Tulsa senior Austin Neil was named Offensive Player of the Week while Temple redshirt senior Jonah Williams garnered Defensive Player of the Week honors. Tulsa sophomore Jake McGuire earned Goalkeeper of the Week honors while Temple forward Olli Tynkkynen grabbed Rookie of the Week accolades.
 
Offensive Player of the Week
Austin Neil * Sr. * F * Tulsa
Neil had the game-tying goal and assisted on the game-winner in Tulsa’s 2-1 win over SIU-Edwardsville on Sunday. The senior had six shots, four of which were on goal, in a 1-1 week for the Golden Hurricane.
 
Defensive Player of the Week
Jonah Williams * R-Sr. * D * Temple
Williams helped lead a Temple defense that allowed just one goal in two games, including a shutout of Sacramento State where the Owls didn’t allow a single shot on goal. The redshirt senior also assisted on a goal versus the Hornets.
 
Goalkeeper of the Week
Jake McGuire * So. * Tulsa
McGuire made 11 saves over the weekend for a .846 save percentage. The sophomore stopped seven shots versus Saint Louis, a team that is receiving votes in the latest NSCAA poll, and made four saves against SIU-Edwardsville. McGuire played 190:31 minutes in the net over two games.
 
Rookie of the Week
Olli Tynkkynen * Fr. * F * Temple
Tynkkynen scored a pair of goals in Temple’s 3-0 win over Sacramento State on Sunday. The goals were the first of his career. Tynkkynen had four shots on the week, including three on goal.
 
Weekly Honor Roll
Cyle Larin * F * So. * UConn
Scored his 15th career goal in UConn’s 3-2 loss to No. 17/17 Coastal Carolina.
 
Ashani Walker * M * Sr. * Cincinnati
Had the game-tying goal in the 57th minute as Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky played to a 1-1 tie.
 
Sebastian Evers * GK * Sr. * UCF
Made eight saves vs. Oregon State, tied Warren Russ (1986-89) for seventh all-time on UCF’s career saves list with 150.
 
Michael Nelson * GK * R-Fr. * SMU
Registered seven saves in a 1-0 loss at No. 10/12 Michigan State.
 
Hayden Cochran * M * Fr. * Memphis
Scored first career-goal in Memphis’ season-opening loss at UAB.
