The American Today: Tuesday, Sept. 2
Tuesday will be a quiet day on the field and court in The American, as no teams are in action today. As teams prepare for their weekend opponents, The American Today will recap last night’s four soccer games and weekly awards that were handed out Monday in a variety of sports.
 
Men’s and Women’s Soccer Undefeated Monday
Two men’s and two women’s soccer teams were in action on Labor Day, with the four squads posting a combined 2-0-2 mark on the day.
 
On the men’s side, No. 8 UConn downed Stony Brook, 3-0, in Storrs. Cincinnati hosted Wright State, playing to a 1-1 draw. In women’s soccer action, UConn and Syracuse tied, 1-1, while East Carolina trounced Francis Marion, 6-0.
 
Lucas, Young and Kloss Take Home Weekly Football Honors
Tulsa WR Keevan Lucas was one of the stars of college football this weekend, making 13 catches for 233 yards and three touchdowns in a thrilling win over Tulane on Thursday night in both teams’ first game in The American. Lucas, who led the nation in receiving yards this week, was honored with The American’s first Offensive Player of the Week award of 2014 on Monday.
 
Temple turned over Vanderbilt seven times in a 37-7 victory late Thursday night in Nashville. Two of those Temple takeaways were interceptions by the Owls’ Tavon Young, with both picks leading to points on the ensuing Temple drives. The Owls held the Commodores to 28 yards of offense in the game, with Young earning Defensive Player of the Week honors.
 
USF kicker Marvin Kloss was named Special Teams Player of the Week after kicking three field goals and adding three extra points in the Bulls’ victory over Western Carolina on Saturday night. Kloss, who was a Lou Groza Award finalist a year ago, made kicks of 47, 33 and 26 yards in the first half.
 
Tulsa, Temple Each Earn Two Weekly Men’s Soccer Awards
Tulsa’s Austin Neil was tabbed as men’s soccer Offensive Player of the Week after scoring the game-tying goal and assisting on the game-winner vs. SIU Edwardsville. His teammate, Jake McGuire, was named goalkeeper of the week after making four stops vs. SIUE and seven against Saint Louis.
 
Temple freshman Olli Tynkkynen scored two goals against Sacramento State on Sunday to earn Rookie of the Week honors, while his fellow Owl Jonah Williams garnered Defensive Player of the Week honors.
 
Second Week of Women’s Soccer Awards Announced
UCF’s Jennifer Martin scored the game-winner vs. TCU on her way to this week’s Offensive Player of the Week for women’s soccer. Tulsa’s Rachel Thun scored two goals and three assists on the weekend, being named Rookie of the Week.
 
Temple’s Shauni Kerkhoff posted a shutout vs. Philadelphia rival Saint Joseph’s for Goalkeeper of the Week honors, while Tulsa’s Roman Edwards helped the Golden Hurricane to a pair of wins on her way to Defensive Player of the Week.
 
Hervey, Anagu Named Volleyball Players of the Week
UCF’s Jale Hervey was named volleyball Offensive Player of the Week after recording a .481 hitting percentage and 5.00 kills per set, as the Knights went 4-0 without surrendering a set on the weekend.
 
UConn’s Immanuella Anagu notched a conference best 1.85 blocks per set on the weekend, recording 10-block performances against both Central Connecticut and Indiana on Saturday to earn Defensive Player of the Week honors.
