Women’s Soccer Recap: UConn Draws, ECU Posts Third Straight Shutout

The American had a good showing yesterday, after UConn split with Syracuse in double overtime and East Carolina shutout Francis Marion 6-0, both on the road.

The Huskies got on the board first in the 11th minute after rookie Danielle Gottwik scored from the top of the penalty area. Gottwik led the team with shots (5), three on goal. Syracuse came back to tie it before the end of the first half but neither team could secure the win the rest of the way. Gottwik had a near goal in the second half that was tipped by Syracuse goalie MacKenzie Moranz.

Allison Saucier and Emily Armstrong split time in the net for UConn, with Armstrong finishing out the game.

The last time UConn tied was against Marquette, on Oct. 7, 2012. UConn leads the series overall against Syracuse 18-1-1.

East Carolina posted its third straight shutout against Francis Marion, where the Pirates recorded a 6-0 victory. All six goals for ECU were scored by different players.

ECU scored first after sophomore Autumn Berry made her first career goal, the only shot of the first half. She also had one assist.

Lana Spitler found the back in the net nearly 60 minutes into the game. It was her first of the season. Less than ten minutes later, freshmen Brittany Fary made it 3-0. Kendall Frey, Lexi Herring and Charlotte Pearsall each also had a goal to make the final score 6-0.

Saundra Baron and Erika Lenns both saw time in the goal for ECU.
UConn and ECU now move to 2-1-1 and 3-1-0 overall respectively.
