Six From The American Named Campbell Trophy Semifinalists

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Six American Athletic Conference players are among the 167 semifinalists, spanning all levels of college football, for the 2014 William V. Campbell Trophy, presented by Fidelity Investments, as announced by the National Football Foundation.

The Campbell Trophy recognizes an individual as the top scholar-athlete in the nation. As many as 16 finalists will be named as recipients of the National Fotball Foundation National Scholar-Athlete Award.

A nominee must be a senior or graduate student in his final year of eligibility with a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.2. Nominees must have outstanding football ability as a first-team player or significant contributor and must have demonstrated strong leadership and citizenship. The class is selected each year by the NFF Awards Committee.

The six American Athletic Conference semifinalists include UCF defensive back Sean Beckton, UConn long-snapper Adam Mueller, East Carolina kicker Warren Harvey, Memphis linebacker Charles Harris, SMU linebacker Stephon Sanders, and Tulane safety Sam Scofield.

Each of The American's semifinalists will have the opportunity to receive an $18,000 scholarship that can be used for postgraduate education, if they are selected as finalists for the Campell Trophy. The finalists will be named Oct. 30, while the winner of the Campbell Trophy will be announced Dec. 9 at the 57th annual National Football Foundation Awards Dinner in New York City.
