Volleyball Recap: UCF, Cincinnati Move to 2-0 In Conference Play

UCF and Cincinnati picked up road victories Sunday to join UConn at the top of The American standings through one weekend of conference play, as the three teams lead the conference with 2-0 records. The Knights and Bearcats were joined in the win column by Houston, SMU and Temple to close out an exciting opening weekend.
 
UCF traveled to Tulsa after a thrilling five-set win at SMU Friday, and the Knights put on an offensive display against the Golden Hurricane to move to 2-0 in The American. UCF hit .371 in a four-set victory over Tulsa, led on the attack by Jale Hervey, who hit .500 with 17 kills for the Knights. Erica Bohannon had 24 kills for Tulsa in the defeat, while Bailey Clampitt tallied 48 assists.
 
Cincinnati followed up a win at Houston with a trip to New Orleans to take on Tulane. The Bearcats jumped up 2-0 on the Green Wave before eventually closing out the match in four to move to 2-0 in The American. Emma Roberson hit .351 with 16 kills for Cincinnati, while Sarah Ray had 14 kills for Tulane.
 
Houston rebounded from a five-set loss to Cincinnati Friday with a four-set win over Memphis, snapping the Tigers’ nine-match win streak. Cortney Warren had 25 kills for the Cougars, while Kadi Kullerkann hit .448 with 17 kills. Oluchi Agomuo hit .389 with 16 kills for Memphis.
 
SMU salvaged a split of the weekend, bouncing back from the Mustangs’ first loss in nearly a month with a three-set win over USF. Caroline Young had a double-double of 12 kills and 11 digs for the Mustangs, while Erin Fairs had her 10th double-double of the year for the Bulls and tallied her 1,000th career dig.
 
Temple, who last played Wednesday at UConn, showed no signs of rust in a three-set victory at East Carolina. Tyler Davis had 13 kills and Sandra Sydlik tallied 36 assists for the Owls in the sweep.
