East Carolina Rally Not Enough, Pirates Fall to BYU, 45-38



PROVO, Utah (AP) — Algernon Brown scored on a 9-yard run with 19 seconds left to play and Brigham Young survived a big fourth-quarter comeback to hold off East Carolina, 45-38 on Saturday night.

BYU held a 38-21 lead going into the fourth quarter, but the Pirates scored 17 straight points to tie the game at 38-38 with 4:01 remaining on a 34-yard field goal by Davis Plowman.

The Cougars responded with a 75-yard, 10-play drive capped by Brown's third touchdown of the game.

Tanner Mangum was 24 of 33 for 332 yards and three touchdowns to lead BYU (4-2) while Brown carried 24 times for 134 yards and three touchdowns, including a 53-yard dash early in the third quarter.

Blake Kemp was 28 of 36 for 370 yards and two touchdowns to lead East Carolina (3-3), finding Isaiah Jones from 7 yards out to cut the BYU lead to 38-35.
