PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Three American Athletic Conference teams – Memphis, Temple and Houston – were listed among the top 25 by the College Football Playoff Selection Committee in the first rankings of the 2015 season.
Memphis was the highest ranked of The American teams as the Tigers were slotted at No. 13 by the selection committee. Memphis has won 15 consecutive games, dating to last season, and is off to an 8-0 start in 2015. The Tigers’ ledger includes a win against Mississippi, which is ranked No. 18 by the CFP, as well as four road wins. Memphis faces a Navy squad that is 6-1 on the year Saturday.
Temple is No. 22 in the CFP rankings. The Owls are 7-1 on the season, with the lone loss a 24-20 setback last Saturday to a Notre Dame team that is ranked No. 5 by the selection committee. Temple also has four road wins to its credit and scored an Opening Day win against a Penn State squad that has a 7-2 record.
Houston was ranked No. 25 by the committee. The Cougars take a nine-game winning streak into Saturday’s game against Cincinnati. Houston is one of two teams nationally (along with No. 6 Baylor) that has won six games by at least 21 points, while the Cougars lead the nation in turnover margin (+15). Houston also has four road victories in 2015.
With the three teams in this week’s CFP rankings, nine of The American’s 12 teams have been ranked in the top 25 of either the College Football Playoff or Bowl Championship Series rankings since the start of the 2008 season. Houston last appeared in the BCS rankings in the 2011 season, while Memphis and Temple make their debuts in the poll that is used to select the national championship participants.
Since the formation of the American Athletic Conference, five schools – UCF, East Carolina, Houston, Memphis and Temple – have been ranked by either the College Football Playoff or Bowl Championship Series.
