Tulane picked up a pivotal road win in dramatic fashion to highlight Saturday’s action in The American.
G Jonathan Stark drilled a 3-pointer as time expired to give Tulane a 50-49 win at Cincinnati. G Jay Hook led the way in the game with 18 points and eight rebounds for the Green Wave, which improved to 14-10 and 5-7 in conference play.
No. 25 SMU tallied a 73-55 victory over UConn at Moody Coliseum in front of a record crowd of 7,395 to improve to 21-5 and 12-2 in The American. Four Mustangs were in double figures in scoring in the victory, led by 13 points each from C Yanick Moreira, G Sterling Brown and F Markus Kennedy. G Ryan Boatright tallied a game-high 19 points for the Huskies.
Temple won its seventh straight game, downing East Carolina 66-53 at Liacouras Center. G Will Cummings had 17 points, seven rebounds and six assists for the Owls while F Jaylen Bond tallied seven points and 16 rebounds. Temple improved to 19-7 and 10-3 in The American and held a 49-26 advantage in rebounding. G Terry Whisnant scored 13 points to lead the Pirates.
Memphis tallied a 75-48 win at USF to improve to 15-10 and 7-5 in The American. F Shaq Goodwin had 18 points and nine rebounds in the victory. Goodwin is averaging 13.0 points per game and 14.7 rebounds per game over his last three contests. C Ruben Guerrero had a career-high 17 points to lead the Bulls.
There is one game Sunday in The American as Houston travels to UCF (2 p.m., ESPN3.) It will be the first of two games in three days in the Sunshine State for the Cougars, who will look to even the season series after falling in one of the conference’s most exciting games this season. UCF G Brandon Goodwin had 30 points, including key 3-pointers at the end of regulation and overtime, to lift the Knights to a 79-78 win in Houston Jan. 6.
