GREENSBORO, N.C. – Houston’s Danielle Shedd and SMU’s Devin Burnett delivered championship performances on the diving board to lead their respective teams to early leads at the American Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships Wednesday at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.
Shedd punctuated Houston’s sweep of the top four places in women’s one-meter diving with her first American Athletic Conference individual title, while Burnett repeated as The American champion in men’s three-meter diving to push the Mustangs to an early lead in the team standings.
Wednesday’s first day of competition also saw East Carolina’s men earn victories in the two relays contested, while the Pirates and SMU claimed relay wins on the women’s side.
Houston finished Wednesday with 120 points to lead the six-team field on the women’s side. UConn is second with 108 points, followed by East Carolina (96), SMU (82), Tulane (72) and Cincinnati (57).
The four-team men’s competition has SMU in first place with 134 points, followed by East Carolina (116), UConn (105) and Cincinnati (72).
The women’s meet saw Houston place all four of its diving entrants into the championship final, where the Cougar quartet went on to take the top four places. Shedd led the way with a meet record score of 291.35, breaking the mark that teammate Natasha Burgess had set in the preliminary round (291.30). Micaela Bouter took second in the finals with 286.50 points, followed by Burgess (291.30) and Taylor Olanski (275.90).
East Carolina opened the swimming portion of the women’s meet with a win in the 800-yard freestyle relay as the Pirates touched the wall in 7:14.69, more than 10 seconds faster than their seed time and more than three seconds ahead of second-place SMU.
SMUs women had the most impressive performance in the pool Wednesday as the Mustangs set a meet record and automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 200 medley relay, finishing in 1:37.32.
SMU placed four of its men’s divers in the championship final of the three-meter springboard event as Burnett remained unbeaten in American Athletic Conference Championship competition with a first-place score of 390.05. Burnett, who won all three diving events at last year’s American Championships, led a Mustang contingent that took first, third, sixth and eighth. UConn’s John Brice scored 341.45 points to take second.
East Carolina’s men registered the first of its two relay wins with a 6:30.55 showing in the 800 freestyle relay, finishing ahead of second-place SMU, which touched in 6:33.11. The Pirates went on to rally in the final leg of the 200 medley relay as Niko Simic overcame a slight deficit to chase down SMU in the home stretch. East Carolina finished in 1:27.19, while the Mustangs were second in 1:27.65.
Competition continues Thursday, with preliminaries at noon ET and finals at 6 p.m. ET as the individual swimming events get underway.
