NEW YORK - The Tulsa men and UConn women hold the early lead through the first day of the 2015 American Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships.
The Golden Hurricane men’s team totaled 40 points through the first five events, slightly edging UConn (39) and Cincinnati (36). USF stands fourth at 28, while Houston is fifth with 18 points, Memphis (17) is sixth and East Carolina rounds out the field with 16.
On the women’s side, UConn’s 40 points are good for a six-point lead over second-place SMU (34) after six events. Memphis is third (30.5), while Tulane stands fourth (24.5) and UCF is fifth (23). USF stands sixth (22), Cincinnati is seventh (19), Tulsa is in eighth (17), East Carolina is ninth (12), Houston is 10
th (7) and Temple completes the field of 11 (5).
UConn’s Saija Bikanova was the winner in the women’s pentathlon with a meet-record score of 3,906. The Huskies junior held off Memphis’ Martine Bye (3,848) and USF’s Rachel Klinger (3,836).
UCF’s Anne-Marie Blaney was victorious in the women’s 5,000 meters, as the Knight junior made a strong charge on the final lap to win in a meet-record 16:32.73. Blaney, UConn’s Lauren Sara, Tulsa’s Rachel Baptista and SMU’s Melanie Stemper all surpassed last year’s meet record.
Tulsa runners finished one and two in the men’s 5,000. Sophomore Marc Scott led the way (14:37.72) with junior Tim Rackers right behind at 14:41.32. Cincinnati’s Toby Loveridge finished third (14:50.20).
The Golden Hurricane also won the women’s distance medley with a time of 11.39.39 from the team of Olivia Lopez, Roos-Sanne Claasen, Emma Galbraith and Olivia O’Hare. SMU’s quartet of Agnes Sjostrom, Shahira Ehiemua, Holly Archer and Karoline Skatteboe finished second (11:43.42), while UConn’s group of Lisa Zimmer, Katie Foley, Kat Vodopia and Laura Williamson took third (11:51.40).
Tulsa took the men’s distance medley relay with a meet-record time of 9:57.12 from the team of Elijah Silva, Colt Johnson, Isaac Sanders and Simon Greiner. UConn’s squad of Parker Timmerman, James Lowe, Philip Caldwell and David Cotton came in second, also under the meet-record time at 9:59.09. East Carolina’s group of Abel Tecle, Jordan Martin, Justin Lane and Austin Miller placed third (10:05.77).
Cincinnati’s Adrian Valles won the men’s pole vault (17-3.75/5.28m). The Bearcat freshman, who entered the weekend 11
th in the nation in the event, edged out East Carolina’s Henry Johnson and USF’s David Shepherd (both 16-10/5.13m) for the title.
UConn’s Oluwatosin Edwards took the men’s weight throw with a meet-record toss of 65-4/19.91m, surpassing last year’s high mark by .75 meters. Edwards was followed by Memphis’ Luke Vaughn (61-11.75/18.89m) and Tulsa’s Alex Lybarger (60-5.75/18.43m) rounded out the top three.
USF’s Kevin Bell won the men’s long jump (24-6.5/7.48m), as the Bulls senior finished ahead of a pair of Cincinnati athletes – Sergio Villanueva in second (24-1.75/7.36m) and Tariq Sanders third (24-0.75/7.11m).
Carolina Carmichael of Memphis captured the women’s pole vault with a meet-record-tying mark of 13-8.50/4.18m, defeating teammate Sabrina Hochreuther and USF’s Emily Clay, tied for second (13-4.5/4.08m).
UConn’s Sarah Bowens won the women’s long jump with a leap of 20-1.75/6.14m, .05 meters shy of the meet record. Tulane’s Tamika Brazzel (19-7/5.97m) and East Carolina’s Leah Lott (19-6.25/5.95m) placed second and third.
SMU’s Rayann Chin won the women’s weight throw (65-2.25/19.87m), while UCF’s Kalen Hambrick (62-4.5/19.01m) was second. Cincinnati’s Annette Echikunwoke placed third (60-1/18.31m) to lead three Bearcats who finished third through fifth.
Memphis’ Luis Hanssler leads the heptathlon through one day with a score of 2,981. Hanssler’s Memphis teammate Marc Klaschka (2,858) and East Carolina’s Alex Mobley-Hollie (2,832) stand second and third.
Three athletes broke the meet record in the pentathlon 60-meter hurdles, led by UCF’s Devinn Cartwright (8.69), while Bikanova (44-8/13.61m) and Bye (42-3.25/12.88m) broke the meet record in the pentathlon shot put.
In the men’s 400-meter dash, UConn’s Trentan Beram had the top qualifying time and a meet record (47.70).
