The American Today - UConn, Temple, Memphis Winners Wednesday

UConn and Temple recorded conference victories Wednesday night, while Memphis tallied a win in its final nonconference game of the regular season.
 
G Ryan Boatright had 23 points, marking his fourth-straight game scoring 20 or more, as UConn downed East Carolina 65-52 at Gampel Pavilion. The Huskies opened the second half on a 14-0 run and shot 53.8-percent from the floor in the final 20 minutes while holding the Pirates to 18 points. UConn moved to 12-9 and 5-4 in The American with the win. G B.J. Tyson had 20 points to lead East Carolina, which shot 54.2-percent in the first half, leading by as much as 10 in the opening stanza.
 
G Will Cummings scored 19 points, including the 1,000th of his college career, as Temple defeated USF 61-48 in Tampa. Cummings did the majority of his damage from the free-throw line, going 10-of-14. Temple improved to 16-7 and 7-3 in The American. G Corey Allen Jr. had 16 points to lead USF, while C Ruben Guerrero grabbed 14 rebounds.


 
Memphis had five players in double figures in a 74-48 win over Jacksonville State at FedEx Forum, improving to 14-8 on the year. F Shaq Goodwin led the way with 16 points, while F Trahson Burrell added 13. Memphis had 20 assists as a team and held the Gamecocks to just eight points in the paint.
 
There are two conference games on Thursday’s schedule with the top two teams in the league standings both in action.
 
Tulsa will look to improve to 10-0 in The American when the Golden Hurricane faces Houston at Hofheinz Pavilion (7 p.m., ESPNU). Tulsa has won 11 games in a row en route to a 16-5 record and 9-0 mark in The American, while going 9-2 on the road this year. Houston is looking for its third-straight victory after home wins over Rice and UConn in its last two outings.
 
No. 23/23 SMU has won 16 of its last 17, with the lone loss in that stretch coming to Cincinnati Jan. 3. The Mustangs will get a rematch with the Bearcats (9 p.m., ESPN), aiming for a split of the season series. The matchup features a battle of the conference’s top scoring offense in SMU (70.1 ppg) and top scoring defense in Cincinnati (54.5 ppg).
