The American Today - USF Completes Sweep; UCF, UConn Tally Ninth-Inning Wins

USF stands at the top of the conference standings following the first weekend of league play in The American after a sweep aided by an offensive explosion Sunday.
 
USF scored 10 runs in the seventh inning for a 15-4, seven-inning win over Cincinnati. 1B Buddy Putnam drove in seven runs in the victory, highlighted by a grand slam that ended the game with an 11-run margin due to conference policy for Sunday travel. Putnam also homered in the fifth inning and hit a sacrifice fly in the first. The Bulls, winners of five straight, improved to 20-8-1 and 3-0 in The American, while the Bearcats dropped to 6-19 and 0-3 in The American. 2B J.J. Carr had two hits and an RBI for Cincinnati.
 
No. 6/11 UCF scored twice in the ninth for a 4-3, walk-off win over No. 17/19 Houston. 1B James Vasquez brought home RF Erik Barber with the winning run on a single up the middle. RHP Zach Rodgers threw eight innings of relief and held the Cougars to one run on five hits as the Knights improved to 22-7 and 2-1 in conference play. LF Zac Taylor drove in a pair of runs for Houston, which fell to 19-9 and 1-2 in The American.
 
UConn scored three times in the ninth for a 5-3 win at Tulane. DH Joe DeRoche-Duffin led off the frame with a game-tying homer before an error and a sac fly gave the Huskies the two-run win. RHP Patrick Ruotolo tossed 3.1 scoreless, hitless innings of relief for the victory as UConn moved to 17-9 and 2-1 in The American. RHP Alex Massey tossed four innings in relief for Tulane in the middle innings, allowing just one baserunner on a hit by pitch. The Green Waver dropped to 18-10 and 1-2 in conference play.
 
CF Darien Tubbs hit an inside-the-park homer as part of a four-run seventh in Memphis’ 4-2 win at East Carolina. Three Memphis relievers combined for 3.2 innings of scoreless relief as the Tigers improved to 17-6 and 2-1 in The American. SS Hunter Allen drove in a run on a squeeze play in the fifth for the Pirates, who fell to 17-12 and 1-2 in conference action.
