UNCASVILLE, Conn. – No. 6 seed Tulane used a balanced scoring attack and a key run late in the first half to power past No. 3 seed Tulsa 71-53 in quarterfinal action Saturday at the 2015 American Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Championship.
Sophomore Leslie Vorpahl had a team-high 17 points and made four 3-pointers for Tulane, which improved to 22-9 on the year. Freshman Kolby Morgan added 15 points while senior Jamie Kaplan chipped in 13.
Junior Ashley Clark led Tulsa with a game-high 23 points on 11-of-17 shooting. Senior Mariah Turner tallied 10 points for the Golden Hurricane in the defeat.
Tulsa opened up a 20-12 lead on a 3-pointer by sophomore Teanna Reid with 7:33 remaining in the first half. Junior Kelsee Grovey scored all six of her points in Tulsa’s opening charge.
The Green Wave responded with a 19-4 run into the final minute of the half to take a lead Tulane would not relinquish. Vorpahl had six of the Green Wave points over the stretch while Kaplan tallied five. Tulane took a 31-26 lead into the locker room.
A Morgan trifecta with 6:05 remaining gave the Green Wave its largest advantage of the game at 63-40. A layup by Tulsa’s Ashley Hughes with 17 seconds to go brought the game to its final 71-53 margin.
Tulane advances to face No. 2 seed USF in Sunday’s second semifinal at 7:30 p.m. on ESPNU.
