Happ, Cross Earn Weekly Awards

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league’s weekly baseball honors for the week ending March 8.

Happ clubbed a pair of homers - a three-run blast and a solo shot - in Sunday’s 6-4 win over Niagara and tallied six runs batted in over just six at-bats in a week altered by weather for the Bearcats, who went 2-0. The Pittsburgh native was on base in six of eight plate appearances this weekend, going 4-for-6 at the plate while also drawing two intentional walks. For the year, Happ leads The American in average (.523), on-base percentage (.625), slugging percentage (.977), home runs (5) and total bases (43).

Cross struck out 15 batters in a complete game win over FIU in Miami Friday night. The right-hander from Brentwood, New Hampshire, held the Panthers to one run on two hits and no walks. Cross set down 27 out of 29 batters after surrendering a leadoff double in the first. Cross leads The American with 41 strikeouts this season.
