PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Student-athletes from Cincinnati, East Carolina and Memphis are the winners of the American Athletic Conference awards in outdoor track and field for the week ending April 12.
Memphis’ Corentin Louis is Men’s Track Athlete of the Week for his performance in the 1,500 at Arkansas’ John McDonnell Invitational. The junior from Fratin, Belgium, finished in 3:50.99 for the third-best time in the event this season among conference runners.
East Carolina’s Avion Jones is Men’s Field Athlete of the Week after his outing in the high jump at the Bill Carson Classic in Greenville. The junior from Virginia Beach, Virginia, cleared 7-2.5/2.20m for the top mark of the year in the conference and sixth-best in the nation.
Cincinnati’s Kenya Woodall is Women’s Track Athlete of the Week for her sprinting performance at the Tennessee Relays. The junior from Coatesville, Pennsylvania, recorded top-16 times in the East in the 100, 200 and 400 at the meet. Her 400 time (53.33) places her 10
th on the season, the 200 time (23.44) is 12
th and her time in the 100 (11.56) is 16
th. The 400 time is first in The American, the 200 time is second and the 100 time is fourth.
Memphis’ Carolina Carmichael is Women’s Field Athlete of the Week after a stellar display in the pole vault. The junior from Lake Forest, Illinois, cleared 14-5.25/4.40m at the John McDonnell Invitational at Arkansas, good for fourth nationally and second in the East. The mark is best in The American by .35 meters.
Weekend Recap
- The UCF track and field team won the USF Triangular Meet after earning 11 first-place finishes out of 19 events.
- Freshman Rebecka Abrahamsson placed second in the women’s triple jump (12.75m) as she broke Cincinnati’s previous school record (12.29m) at the Tennessee Relays. The Bearcats also notched second-place finishes by Frida Akerstrom in the women’s shot put and Macklin Tudor in the men’s discus events.
- Both UConn men’s and women’s track and field teams were victorious at the 2015 UConn Northeast Challenge, the Huskies’ only home regular season meet of the season. The men’s team collected 284 points as 12 Huskies earned first-place results in seven different track events and two field events. Darnell Cummings’s performance in the men’s 100-meter dash (10.48) was the top conference time of the year. The women’s team totaled 239 points with top performances in ten events, including junior Sarah Bowen’s conference-leading finish in the long jump (6.06m).
- East Carolina senior Tania Minkins earned The American’s best time of the year as well as first place in the women’s 100-meter dash (11.45) at the Bill Carson Invitational. Three other Pirates - senior Kaylee Redon and juniors Cheyenne Hutchinson and Avion Jones - also exceeded the league’s previous top marks of 2015 while winning their events. Redon finished with 60.50m in the hammer throw; Hutchinson ran the women’s 100-meter hurdles in 13.34 and Jones won the men’s high jump at 2.20m. The team totaled 11 event wins, as the men and women each took second place at the meet.
- Memphis freshman Antaun Andrews claimed the conference record in the men’s 400-meter dash (48.76) at the John McDonnell Invitational. Carolina Carmichael and Maya Williamson also had top performances as Carmichael surpassed her own in the women’s pole vault (4.40m) and Williamson took first in the women’s 800 (2:07.56).
- Temple’s Blanca Fernandez earned the top spot in The American as she won the women’s 1500m (4:21.61) at the Mason Spring Invitational in Fairfax, Virginia. The Owls’ 4x400 relay team placed second, as senior
Hollis Coleman, junior
Demeshia Davis, and sophomores
Kenya Gaston and
Bionca St. Fleur combined to finish with a time of 3:47.23.
- Tulane’s Daliadiz Ortiz had the top conference javelin mark of the season (50.17m) at the South Alabama Invitational. Three other members of the Green Wave finished first in their field events; Taylor Potts in the women’s shot put (14.96m), Jacqueline Esmay in the women’s hammer throw (50.28m) and Katerina Vodova in the women’s pole vault (4.00m). On the track Nicholas Meloro and Mikayla Sonneborn took first in the men’s and women’s 3000-meter steeplechase, finishing with times of 9:42.94 and 11:59.58, respectively. Redshirt freshman Moses Aloiloi won the event title in the men’s 3000-meter run (8:46.41).
- Tulsa had two first-place finishes at the John McDonnell Invitational as Elijah Silva ran the men’s 800-meter run in 1:48.78 and Isaac Dobos finished the men’s 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:16.42. Both Hurricane runners also claimed the top conference times of the year for their events.
