Knights Sweep Memphis in Friday Doubleheader

The No. 15/17 UCF Knights swept a doubleheader against Memphis Friday evening at the Tiger Softball Stadium, 8-3 and 9-0 in five innings. The Knights improved to 42-6 overall and 13-1 in The American with the wins while the Tigers fell to 14-26 and 2-9 in conference play with the losses.

In the first game UCF took an early lead, scoring three runs in the first inning. Kahley Novak reached on a base hit, eventually scoring on an RBI single to right field by Brittany Solis. With the bases loaded Kalyn Cenal singled to left field and drove in two more runs. Cenal gave the Knights a 4-0 advantage when she hit a solo homerun in the top of the fourth. The Tigers were able to score in the bottom of the inning, after Lindsay Crowdus led off with a triple and then crossed the plate on a groundout by Katie Brignac. It was Crowdus’ fifth triple of the season as well as Brignac’s team-leading 21st RBI. In the fifth UCF senior Farrah Sullivan hit a solo homerun to increase the lead 5-1 heading to the bottom of the inning. The Tigers responded with another run, scoring Addison Maxwell on a base hit by Hannah Harrell. Sami Jo Schulz drove in Memphis’ third and final run in the sixth, bringing in Anna Thomas who reached base on a double.

The Knights outhit Memphis 11-1 in the second game, tallying nine runs in five innings while holding the Tigers scoreless. Linnea Goodman scored in the first on an RBI single by Brittany Solis. UCF took a 4-0 advantage when Jessica Ujvari connected on a three-run homer to left field in the top of the third. The Knights added another run in the fourth after an illegal pitch allowed Maddy Schroeder to score. Cenal had a solo shot in the top of the fifth, her second homerun of the day. With two outs in the inning Schroeder and Goodman put two on base for Novak, who put the Knights up 9-0 with her inside-the-park three-run homer down the left field line.
Anna Thomas broke up a no-hit bid from senior Mackenzie Audas in the bottom of the fifth, recording the Tigers’ only hit of the second game.

The final game of the series is scheduled for Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. CT. at Tiger Softball Stadium in Memphis, Tenn.
