Memphis captured a series win over first-place USF, while a pair of right-handers were stellar in their Saturday outings and the conference home run record was tied.
DH Nate Rupiper and SS Jake Overbey - Memphis’ No. 8 and 9 hitters - combined for five hits and three runs batted in as the Tigers downed USF 6-4 at FedEx Park. LHP Blake Myers pitched two scoreless innings of relief for the win, which moved Memphis to 25-12 and 7-5 in The American. SS Kyle Teaf had four hits for the Bulls, who fell to 26-14-1 and 8-4 in conference play, one game up on the Tigers.
Houston won both ends of a doubleheader against Cincinnati, taking the first game 4-1 and the second 13-0. 1B Chris Iriart hit his league-leading 12
th home run in the first game, which ties last year’s conference record set by UCF’s Tommy Williams. The homer with one out in the sixth broke up a no-hit bid by Cincinnati’s Ryan Atkinson. RHP Kyle Dowdy tossed a complete-game two-hitter and struck out 13 in the second game. Houston moved to 25-14 and 6-5 in The American, while Cincinnati dropped to 12-25 and 4-7 in league play.
RHP Zach Rodgers continued his success over the last month, tossing a complete game three-hitter and striking out 11 in UCF’s 8-0 win over Tulane. Rodgers has thrown 35 innings over his last four appearances - one an eight-inning relief outing - surrendering just two earned runs while striking out 34. UCF improved to 26-14 and 5-6 in The American with the win. DH Hunter Williams had two of the three hits for Tulane, which improved to 23-15 and 4-7 in conference play.
UConn evened its series against East Carolina with a 7-3 win in Storrs. 2B Vinny Siena and 1B Bobby Melley each drove in a pair of runs for the Huskies, who improved to 25-14 and 6-5 in conference play. DH Luke Bolka had three hits for the Pirates, who fell to 23-16 and 5-6 in The American.
