LECANTO, Fla. – Led by three players in the top six of the individual leaderboard, No. 18 USF posted a championship low record team score of 557 (-19) after the first two rounds of the 2015 American Men’s Golf Championship at Black Diamond Ranch Sunday afternoon in Lecanto, Fla. The altered Championship schedule saw the event shortened to two days due to expected inclement weather in the Lecanto, Florida area. The 10 American teams played 36 holes on Sunday and will play the final 18 on Monday.
The Bulls shot a 282 in the first round and bested the previous tournament single round record low of 283 set by UCF in 2014. Later in the day, USF topped their 282 and set a new championship mark after firing a 275 in the second round on 26 birdies and one eagle.
Senior Ryan Fricker (-10, 134), sophomore Rigel Fernandes (-4, 140) and senior Trey Valentine (-2, 142) paced the Bulls after the first 36 holes of play. Fricker shot two rounds of 67 and tied the Championship low round total set by UCF’s Linus Vaisanen in 2014.
The Bulls have a 16 stroke lead over second-place UCF (-3, 573) following day one action. No. 36 Houston recorded a 1-under par 575 and sits two spots behind the Knights in third while No. 29 SMU charted a one-over-par 289 for fourth. Memphis is in fifth place at 296 (+9).
Viasanen is in second place in the individual standings behind Fricker at 138 (-6). Fernandes and SMU’s Andrew Buchanan are tied for third overall at 140 (-4) while Jared O’Kelley (Cincinnati) is in fifth with a three-under-par 141 score.
The third and final round of the 2015 American Men’s Golf Championship will begin at 8 a.m. ET on Monday. An awards ceremony and trophy presentation will take place shortly following the conclusion of the final round.
