PROVIDENCE, R.I. – USF junior Roberto Cid was named American Athletic Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Year for the second consecutive season, as announced by the conference office Thursday.
Cid - the No. 19 ranked player in singles by the ITA and part of the No. 28 doubles team - helped lead the Bulls to The American Championship and a No. 19 team ranking by the ITA heading into the NCAA Championship. The native of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, went 14-4 in singles play, defeating five ranked opponents during the spring to help the Bulls to a 19-6 team record.
Memphis’ Andrew Watson was voted as Freshman of the Year. The native of Reigate, Great Britain, beat opponents from five ranked teams during the spring and won 11 matches in straight sets, while going 14-7 in singles play, as the Tigers advanced to The American Championship semifinals.
USF’s Matt Hill was named The American Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season after leading the Bulls to their second consecutive American Athletic Conference championship. The Bulls stand at 19-6 entering the NCAA Championship and are 12-2 in their last 14 matches. USF captured its second straight American title in commanding fashion April 19 at Tulsa.
The men’s all-conference team is split into singles and doubles selections with two players receiving an award for both. Players ranked in singles or ranked in the top 60 in doubles by the ITA in the most recent rankings following The American Championship are automatically selected to the all-conference team.
Cid and Memphis’ Connor Glennon were named to both the singles and doubles teams. Cid is joined on the doubles team by three other Bulls - Sasha Gozun, Oliver Pramming and Justin Roberts - while Glennon’s doubles partner Kai Lemke also made the team.
In singles, Glennon was one of two Tigers to make the team along with Watson, while a pair of Tulsa players - Or Ram-Harel and Alejandro Espejo earned a spot on the list along with Tulane’s Dominik Koepfer.
USF and Tulsa qualified for the NCAA Men’s Tennis Championship, which will begin with regional play May 8 as the teams set their sights on the final rounds in Waco, Texas, the following week.
