PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The American Athletic Conference announced its annual women’s golf awards on Friday to cap the 2014-15 season. UCF sophomore Ashley Holder was named the American Women’s Golf Player of the Year for the second consecutive season while UCF rookie Laura Sojo took home Freshman of the Year honors. Knights head coach Emily Marron received Coach of the Year accolades.
The awards were voted on by the league’s nine head coaches.
Holder was a unanimous choice for the all-conference team after leading the Knights to a top-25 national ranking this season. She had a top-three finish at the 2015 American Athletic Conference Championship on April 19-21 and has a current average of 73.07, the lowest in the conference. The Orlando native has three top-20 finishes this season and won the Landfall Tradition in October after carding a 209 (-7) in a field that included two top-five teams.
Sojo has four top-20 finishes this season, including a pair of top-10 marks, and has the lowest average among league freshmen with a 73.54. She tied for eighth with a 218 (+2) at the conference championship and helped the Knights win its first league title since 2000.
Marron was chosen as the American Women’s Golf Coach of the Year a week after leading the Knights to the American Women’s Golf Championship title. UCF won by eight strokes over second place SMU and shot an 868 (291-287-290) over the three day event. The victory was the first conference title for UCF since the Atlantic Sun championship in 2000 and marked their first tournament win of the season. The Knights are 23rd in the nation in the latest GolfStat rankings and earned the league’s automatic bid to NCAA Regionals.
The all-conference team spans student-athletes from seven schools and is highlighted by three players from UCF. Houston and Tulane had two players each receive all-conference honors.
