The American Today - Six Teams Within Two Games of First Place With Three to Play

Houston moved back into sole possession of first place, while the conference race remains crowded with three league games to go as six teams are within two games of first place.
 
No. 25/21 Houston captured a series win over East Carolina with an 11-1, seven-inning victory at Cougar Field. LF Corey Julks and CF Ashford Fulmer each hit three-run homers, while LHP Seth Romero limited the Pirates to two hits as Houston improved to 35-17 and 13-8 in The American. RF Eric Tyler homered for the Pirates, who dropped to 32-20 and 12-9 in conference play.
 
Four teams are tied for third as Tulane’s win over USF, a UConn victory over Cincinnati and Memphis’ loss to UCF created the latest logjam with the Green Wave, Bulls, Huskies and Tigers at 11-10 in conference play.
 
CF Richard Carthon drove in all four runs in Tulane’s 4-3 win over USF. Carthon had an RBI single in the third and a three-run homer in the fifth as the Green Wave improved to 31-19 and 11-10 in The American. 1B Buddy Putnam drove in all three of the runs for the Bulls, who fell to 30-21-1 and 11-10 in conference play.
 
UConn completed a sweep of Cincinnati with a 9-4 win in Storrs. LF Blake Davey had a three-RBI day for the Huskies, while 1B Bobby Melley had four hits as UConn improved to 32-20 and 11-10 in The American. 2B Kyle Mottice and SS Ian Happ each drove in two runs for the Bearcats, who fell to 15-35 and 6-15 in the conference.
 
RHP Robby Howell tossed eight innings of one-run ball in UCF’s 4-1 win over Memphis. 2B Tommy Williams homered in the win for the Knights, who improved to 30-22 and 9-12 in The American. C Carter White had three hits and an RBI for the Tigers, who dropped to 33-16 and 11-10 in conference play.
