PROVIDENCE, R.I. – A trio of Cincinnati student-athletes are joined by a UConn runner as the winners of the final American Athletic Conference awards in outdoor track and field for the 2015 season.
UConn’s Darnell Cummings is Men’s Track Athlete of the Week for his performance at the New England Championships. The senior from Millbrook, New York ran a personal-best 10.38 in the preliminaries of the 100-meter dash before winning the event in a time of 10.45.
Cincinnati’s Adrian Valles is Men’s Field Athlete of the Week after his outing at Louisville’s Cardinal Twilight. The freshman from Pamplona, Spain, recorded the best pole vault mark in conference history with a mark of 18-3.25/5.57m. Valles’ leap is good for third in the East and fifth nationally.
The Bearcats’ Aliya Barnes is Women’s Track Athlete of the Week for her display in Louisville. The freshman from West Orange, New Jersey, tallied a personal record in the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 13.87. The finish placed her second at the Cardinal Twilight and seventh in the Bearcat record books.
Cincinnati’s Erika Hurd is Women’s Field Athlete of the Week for her efforts in the high jump. The junior from Manchester, Maryland, cleared 6-0.5/1.84m for the top conference mark of the year and seventh in the East. Hurd’s leap, which matched her career-best outdoor performance, ranks second in the Cincinnati record books.

UCF throwers Tara Daniels and Kalen Hambrick each placed second in their events at the UNF Invite on Friday in Jacksonville. Daniels recorded a personal best in the women’s shot put with a mark of 14.37 meters, while Hambrick recorded 56.33 meters in the women’s hammer throw.
Cincinnati earned three event titles and eight additional top-three finishes at the Cardinal Twilight on Friday. The Bearcats finished strong in the field events as Erika Hurd took first place in the women’s high jump, recording 1.84 meters. Macklin Tudor finished first in the men’s discus throw and re-set his own school record in with a distance of 61.41 meters. Adrian Valles also earned the top finish and set a new school record in his event, recording a mark of 5.57 meters in the men’s pole vault.
The UConn men’s track and field team finished in third place at the 2015 NEICAAA Outdoor Championship on Saturday in Boston. The Huskies collected three gold medals at the meet, as Darnell Cummings ran the 100 meter dash in 10.46 seconds, the 4x100-meter relay team consisting of Trenten Beram, Chinedu Amonu, Patrick Hayes and Cummings had a 40.86 second finish, and Matthew Graziano tossed 53.06 meters in the discus throw.
East Carolina men’s 4x100-meter relay team, which was comprised of senior Michael Neal, senior Joe Wilson, freshman Jordan Martin and freshman Xavier Brown, earned the top finish with a time of 40.97 seconds on Thursday at the Duke Twilight Invitational. Sophomore Taylor Drummonds also represented the Pirates at the meet and took seventh in the women’s pole vault (3.75m).
The USF Bulls had six athletes with top-five finishes at the UNF Region Preview on Friday. Junior Charvin Graham won the men’s hammer throw with a personal-best toss of 55.20 meters. Junior Winston Perry took second in the men’s pole vault (5.15m), while senior Kevin Bell placed fourth in the men’s long jump. For the women’s team Hannah Gospodinsky, Jennifer Slagus and Kaitlyn Campo each earned third place in their events. Gospodinsky threw 14.50 meters in the shot put; Slagus recorded 55.11 meters in the hammer throw, and Campo ran the 5,000-meter run in 18:13.89.
