The American Today - Houston Clinches No. 1 Seed in The American Championship

Houston captured at least a share of the regular-season crown with a win Friday night to highlight the conference slate.
 
No. 19/21 Houston clinched the No. 1 seed in The American Championship with a 3-1 win over UConn. RHP Kyle Dowdy tossed six innings of one-run ball for the Cougars, who improved to 38-17 and 15-8 in The American. DH Joe DeRoche-Duffin had two hits and an RBI for the Huskies, who fell to 33-22 and 11-12 in conference play.
 
USF scored five runs in the seventh for a 7-3 win over UCF in Tampa. RF Luke Maglich and DH Luke Borders each drove in two runs for the Bulls, who improved to 31-22-1 and 12-11 in The American. 2B Kyle Marsh went 4-for-4 with three RBIs for the Knights, who dropped to 31-24 and 10-13 in The American.
 
3B Kirk Morgan had four hits in East Carolina’s 6-4 win at Cincinnati. LHP Evan Kruczynski tossed 7.1 innings of two-run ball for the Pirates, who improved to 35-20 and 14-9 in The American. C Woody Wallace went 3-for-4 and drove in three for the Bearcats, who fell to 15-38 and 6-17 in the conference.
 
Memphis and Tulane were rained out and will play a doubleheader at Noon ET/11 a.m. CT Saturday. East Carolina will face Cincinnati at 11 a.m., USF will host UCF at 1 p.m., while Houston and UConn square off at 2 p.m. ET/1 p.m. CT.
