STORRS, Conn. - Memphis is the points leader through two days in both the men’s and women’s competition at the 2015 American Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships at George J. Sherman Family - Sports Complex at the University of Connecticut.
The Tigers men’s squad has 43.5 points through two days, good for a 10.5-point lead on UConn (33), while Tulsa is third (31). East Carolina is fourth (16.5), Cincinnati is fifth (15), while Houston (6), Tulane (6) and USF (5) round out the field.
The Memphis women stand at 38 points, good for a two-point lead over SMU (36) and five-point advantage over Cincinnati (33). UConn (22) and East Carolina (17.5) round out the top five. USF is sixth (14.5) and Houston seventh (13), while Tulsa (9), UCF (6) and Tulane (6) have also scored.
Memphis took the top three spots in the women’s pole vault. Carolina Carmichael shattered the meet record by clearing 14-9/4.50m. The Tigers’ Clara Amat-Fernandez and Sabrina Hochreuther were second and third (13-2.25/4.02m).
The Tigers had a 1-2 finish in the decathlon with Luis Hanssler repeating as champion at 7,158, while Tuure Hollo finished second (6,964).
Memphis’ Luke Vaughn won the men’s discus at a meet-record 190-8/58.13m. Cincinnati’s Macklin Tudor (189-9/57.83m) was also better than the meet record, while Memphis’ Yannik Schaly (168-10/51.46m was third.
SMU's Rayann Chin won the discus in 165-11/50.58m. Houston's Justine Price (160-7/48.94m) was second, while Cincinnati's Frida Akerstrom (153-11/46.91m) finished third.
Lucija Cvitanovic of SMU won the heptathlon for the second year in a row with a score of 5,427. Cincinnati’s Kaitlyn Good was second (5,403) while Memphis’ Martine Bye was third (5,122).
Tulsa’s Bryce Robinson led the way in the men’s 200-meter dash preliminaries (21.19). UCF’s J’Nea Bellamy paced the women’s qualifying (23.61).
East Carolina’s Xavier Brown posted the top time (52.90) in the men’s 400-meter hurdle preliminaries. UCF’s Sandy Jean-Claude led the way in the women’s preliminaries (59.93).
Houston’s Drevan Anderson Kaapa came in a hundredth of a second under the meet record with a time of 1:50.20 to lead the men’s 800-meter preliminaries. UConn held the top two times in the women’s 800-meter run preliminaries with Kat Vodopia (2:05.89) and Faith Dismuke (2:06.00) pacing the field.
