STORRS, Conn. - The Memphis men’s team and SMU women’s program hold the team leads through three days at the 2015 American Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex at UConn.
The Memphis men (74.5) hold a six-point lead over Cincinnati (68.5) with UConn narrowly behind in third (68). Tulsa is fourth (38) and East Carolina fifth (35.5), while Houston (27.5), USF (23) and Tulane (16) round out the field.
SMU leads the women’s scoring with 71 points, good for a 25-point advantage over Memphis (46). Cincinnati (41), UConn (38) and Tulane (30) round out the top five. East Carolina (25.5), Houston (20), USF (16.5), UCF (10), Tulsa (10) and Temple (4) complete the scoring.
Cincinnati grabbed the top two spots in the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase. Tyler Ross placed first (9:04.33), while Dan Huben (9:10.22) edged USF’s Michael Babinec (9:10.85) for second.
SMU swept the podium in the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase, led by Karoline Skatteboe (10:37.76). Shanoah Souza (10:44.27) placed second, while Agnes Sjostrom (10:51.13) was third.
Tulane’s Devon Breaux took the men’s long jump at 24-5.5/7.45m. USF’s Kevin Bell placed second (24-1.75/7.36m) and Houston’s Marc Cleaveaux was third (23-8.75/7.23m).
UConn finished first and third in the women’s long jump. Sarah Bowens won the event at 20-5.25/6.23m. Tulane’s Katerina Vodova was second (19-11/6.07m), while UConn’s Odrine Belot placed third (19-6.25/5.95m).
Memphis tallied three of the top four spots in the men’s javelin. The Tigers’ Thomas Poole won the event at a meet-record 230-2/70.17m, while teammate Michael Criticos was second (227-11/69.46m). Houston’s Jack Thomas placed third (226-6/69.03m).
Tulane picked up another event win in the women’s javelin, as Daliadiz Ortiz recorded a throw of 160-11/49.06m. Memphis’ Martine Bye finished second (157-3/47.94m) and SMU Lucija Cvitanovic was third (153-11/46.92m).
East Carolina’s Avion Jones won the men’s high jump at a meet-record height of 7-0.5/2.15m. Cincinnati’s Michael Nwankwo was second (6-11.5/2.12m), while four athletes tied for third.
Cincinnati’s Adrian Valles eclipsed the meet and stadium records in the men’s pole vault as he cleared 18-6.5/5.65m. UConn took the next two spots, with Cory Duggan second and Craig Hunter third (17-3.75/5.28m).
Tulsa’s Adam Palamar posted the top time in men’s 1,500-meter preliminaries (3:51.17), four hundredths of a second better than teammate Mark Middleton (3:51.21).
Sade Mariah Greenidge of Houston recorded the top time in women’s 100-meter hurdle qualifying (13.59). The Cougars’ Isaac Williams posted the top time in the men’s 110-meter hurdles (14.14).
UConn’s Chinedu Amonu posted the top conference time of the year in 400-meter preliminaries (46.95). East Carolina’s Aiesha Goggins recorded the best time in women’s qualifying (52.60).
Tulsa’s Bryce Robinson set a stadium record in the men’s 100-meter dash preliminaries (10.47), while UCF’s J’Nea Bellamy was the top qualifier on the women’s side (11.72).
