STORRS, Conn. - The UConn men’s team and SMU women’s squad won the 2015 American Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships at the George J. Sherman Family - Sports Complex at UConn.
The host Huskies of UConn took the men's team title by 31 points with a total team score of 158. Tulsa was the runner-up with 127, while Houston (124.5), Cincinnati (119.5) and Memphis (114.5) rounded out the top five. East Carolina (89.5), USF (60) and Tulane (24) rounded out the scoring.
SMU won its second consecutive women’s title with 131 points, six better than runner-up UConn (125). Cincinnati (117), UCF (92) and Memphis (83) completed the top five. East Carolina (77.5) was sixth, Houston (63) finished seventh and Tulane (41) eighth, while Tulsa (36), USF (28.5) and Temple (25) rounded out the field.
Tulsa’s Bryce Robinson was named Most Outstanding Performer in Men’s Track, while UCF’s J’Nea Bellamy earned the honor on the women’s side. The Most Outstanding Performer in Men’s Field was awarded to Cincinnati’s Adrian Valles, while the Bearcats’ Frida Akerstrom was tabbed for Women’s Field.
The coaching staffs of the two winning programs were voted by their peers as Coaching Staff of the Year, with the UConn men led by Greg Roy and the SMU women by Dave Wollman.
Tulsa’s Bryce Robinson shattered the meet and stadium record with a 9.99 in the men’s 100-meter dash. UConn’s Darnell Cummings (10.34) and Houston’s Leshon Collins (10.44) were both also under the meet record. Robinson also won the 200 in a meet-record 20.47 over a pair of Houston sprinters - Curtis Brown (21.04) and Collins (21.05)
UCF’s J’Nea Bellamy won the women’s 100-meter dash in 11.49 with SMU’s Stephanie Kalu second (11.57) and UCF’s Christal Peterson third (11.58). Bellamy took the 200 in a meet and stadium-record 23.06. UConn’s Nyanka Joseph (23.33) and Cincinnati’s Kenya Woodall (23.43) rounded out the top three.
UConn’s Chinedu Amonu (46.89) edged USF’s Dwight Davis (46.90) in the men’s 400-meter dash. UConnn’s Robert Hovanec was third (47.47).
East Carolina’s Aiesha Goggins won the women’s 400-meter dash (51.48). Cincinnati’s Kenya Woodall was second (51.78) while Tulane’s Lilla McMillan was third (51.86).
Tulsa’s Simon Greiner won the men’s 800 in 1:50.26. Houston’s Drevan Anderson Kaapa (1:50.57) was second while USF’s Anderson Charles (1:50.89) took third.
Memphis’ Maya Williamson took the women’s 800-meter run in a meet and stadium-record 2:05.52. UConn took second and third courtesy Faith Dismuke (2:06.49) and Kat Vodopia (2:06.70).
Tulsa grabbed the top three spots in the men’s 1,500-meter run. Adam Palamar led the way in a meet-record 3:49.58. Simon Greiner was second (3:50.25) and Elijah Silva took third (3:50.36), all under the meet record.
Temple’s Blanca Fernandez won the women’s 1,500 in 4:28.97. Tulsa’s Olivia O’Hare (4:29.51) placed second and Memphis’ Martina Rodriguez was third (4:29.71).
Tulsa took two of the top three spots in the men’s 5,000-meter run, led by Marc Scott (14:35.50). Houston’s Brian Barraza was second (14:36.78) while Tim Rackers of Tulsa was third (14:41.29).
UConn went 1-2 in the women’s 5,000. Lauren Sara tallied the top time (16:35.08), while teammate Emily Durgin was second (16:53.92). SMU’s Shanoah Souza (17:02.79) was third.
Cheyenne Hutchinson of East Carolina took the women’s 100-meter hurdles in 13.31. Houston’s Sade Mariah Greenidge (13.37) was second, while UCF’s Johna’ Whitaker (13.43) was third.
Houston’s Isaac Williams set a meet and stadium record in the men’s 110-meter hurdles in 13.59. UConn’s Selwyn Maxwell was second (13.97) and East Carolina’s Demonte Wilson (14.05) was third.
Cincinnati’s Andre Anderson (51.12) outlasted East Carolina’s Xavier Brown (51.14) in the men’s 400-meter hurdles. USF’s Paul Barrett (51.79) took third.
Sandy Jean-Claude of UCF took the women’s 400-meter hurdles in 58.70. Houston’s Sade Mariah Greenidge (58.77) was second while East Carolina’s Janieyah Collins took third (59.59).
Houston won the men’s 4x100 relay in a stadium-record 39.97 with the team of Xavier Floyd, Isaac Williams, James Arnett and Curtis Brown. USF finished (40.63) while Cincinnati placed third (40.98).
The women’s 4x100 relay was won by UCF’s quartet of Kirsten Nieuwendam, Christal Peterson, J’Nea Bellamy and Briana Vaughn in a meet and stadium-record 44.47. East Carolina placed second (44.68) while SMU came in third (44.75). The top three teams were all in under the previous meet record of 44.87 set by UCF in 2014.
East Carolina won a thrilling men’s 4x400 in 3:11.14, as the top five spots were separated by 1.03 seconds. Memphis (3:11.19) was second and Cincinnati (3:11.71) placed third.
UConn won the women’s 4x400 in 3:32.76 with the team of Nyanka Joseph, Faith Dismuke, Paris Taft and Deysha Smith-Jenkins. UCF placed second and Cincinnati was third.
Cincinnati’s Erika Hurd won the women’s high jump at 5-9.25/1.76m. Teammate Loretta Blaut also cleared 5-9.25/1.76m, while SMU’s Isabella Marten was third (5-8/1.73m).
Macklin Tudor of Cincinnati won the men’s shot put at 59-1.5/18.02m. Houston’s Cameron Cornelius (58-10.75/17.95m) was second while Memphis athletes finished third, fourth and fifth, led by Yannik Schaly (58-3.25/17.76m).
Cincinnati’s Frida Akerstrom captured first in the women’s shot put, tying the meet record at 52-8.75/16.07m. SMU took second and third from Tochi Nlemchi (51-3.5/15.63m) and Rayann Chin (50-1.75/15.28m).
Houston’s David Brown took the men’s triple jump with a mark of 50-8.25/15.45m. UConn took the second and third spots with Amanze Williams (50-0.5/15.25m) and John Landis (49-10.5/15.20m).
Chardae Greenlee of Memphis captured the women’s triple jump with a leap of 44-2.5/13.47m. Odrine Belot of UConn (43-1.5/13.14m) was second, while SMU’s Isabella Marten took third (43-0.5/13.12m).
